A Music Blog (Most of the Time)

“Look Under Your Bed, It Will Set You Free”

Hi there, My name’s Dylan Phelps, at the time of writing I am a 21 year old college student living in Murrieta, California. To put it simply, I love music, everything about it, playing it, making it, and especially thinking about it and talking about it. That’s what the purpose of this blog is. More than anything, this is for me. A little place for me to talk about the shit I like. If you like the same shit, feel free to read.

I’ve been interested in music my entire life, ever since a plastic guitar got put in my hand and I played Guitar hero 2 as a toddler, music’s always been there. whether It was punk rock and hip hop blaring from the speakers as I did Mctwists in a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game, listened to all the different hits on my mom’s IPod, or letting my imagination run wild while listening to the soundtracks of my favorite movies. Music has always been there. But something ignited in me around the age of 13. Music became oxygen to me. J-Rock band “Asian Kung Fu Generation” was where I first got this feeling. Whether it was “Haruka Kanata”, “Rewrite” or “A Town In Blue” I found an emotional connection with music that I hadn’t understood before. The strangest thing was that, it kept happening. I felt it hearing Fall Out Boy, I felt it hearing Pink Floyd, Metallica, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Nirvana, Green Day, Twenty One Pilots, Queen, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and just so many many more, all across the musical spectrum.

But it was my older brother showing me the Pixies when I was 14, the summer before high school. There’s a magic that I hear in the sound of a Pixies record that I still hear now. I had the pleasure of seeing them live about a month ago and it was transcendent for me. Being second row in the Hollywood Palladium, watching these fucking legends tear it up, it does something to a person. They ripped through all the classics, “Here comes your man”, “Debaser” ,”Caribou” “Bone Machine” “Vamos” they played everything, even B sides I didn’t even know about like “Into the white” But what was probably the most important moment for me at this show was hearing what I probably would call my favorite song ever live. “Where is my Mind?” is a song off the band’s debut album “Surfer Rosa” Released in 1988. This was the first song I ever heard from them, and its stuck with me for years.
